Imagine paying just $150 a year to heat and cool your home, but that’s the reality for homeowners in a new northwest Albuquerque community. Paul Allen Homes is building highly energy-efficient houses in a quiet community near Unser and McMahon Blvds., and the homes are selling quicker than they can be built, averaging 12 to 15 houses sold every month. Luz Estrada will be able to move in to her new, energy efficient house next month. "It’s incredible being a single mom with two kids, and to be able to get a home at that price, for the quality," said Estrada. Her brand new, three bedroom, two bath, two car garage home will cost her $162,000 and she will save hundreds heating it. "I won't have to worry about, ‘It's turn off the heater, we can't afford the heat this month.’ It will be a relief," she says. Ron Oyer closed the deal on his house in just one day. He says, as a consumer, buying a green home is the only way to go. “The insulating qualities, and the utilities that they installed, the efficient furnace and the instant on-demand water heater-- that was one of the big factors. It's really worked out well," said Oyer. Paul Allen Homes are built to national Green Built standards which measure how efficient they are. "The type of materials that are used in the house (are) healthful … so that you're not breathing any kind of formaldehyde ridden materials, paints, those kinds of things," says Rex Allen, the owner of Paul Allen Homes. Allen says there are 87 additional construction items done on the houses that go over and above energy codes. The homes are also hyper insulated, and include tank-less water heaters and high-energy efficient furnaces. "We can operate the house heat-wise at $84 a year. Cooling costs will run in the mid $60’s for the entire year," said Allen.
