Veterans throughout New Mexico often have to make the trip to Albuquerque’s VA Medical Center to get necessary treatment, but it's a difficult trip for some vets to make on their own and getting even harder to find volunteers willing to provide a ride. Each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday volunteers in the Farmington area drive disabled veterans to Albuquerque for treatment they can't get near their homes. Roy Williams is one of those veterans who has used the service the last five years. "They tell us 'We'll get you there' and they do get us there, no matter what the weather is, we always get there on time," says Williams. With five volunteers, local veterans’ organizations that run the service say they could use more help. "You don't have to be a veteran to be a driver,” says Dannie Roberts, one of the volunteers. “Anybody that would like to donate, we would greatly appreciate it." Roberts says hundreds of veterans in San Juan County take advantage of the vans, but with a high number of veterans meeting the demand is difficult. Those interested in volunteering can get more information by calling (505) 793-1782 or going under the volunteer programs page of the VA’s website.
